[長難句分析]這句話的主干是Galileo’s greatest glory was that…，其中that引導(dǎo)表語從句。在表語從句中又出現(xiàn)一個(gè)that引導(dǎo)的從句“that the planets revolve around…”，這個(gè)that引導(dǎo)的是什么從句呢？仔細(xì)觀察，會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)，這個(gè)that引導(dǎo)的是賓語從句，做不定式to prove的賓語。通過分析，我們得出這個(gè)長難句中有兩個(gè)名詞性從句，分別是表語從句和賓語從句。我們在翻譯中遇到表語從句和賓語從句時(shí)，可采用順譯法，按照“主-系-表（主-謂-賓）”的順序翻譯。

[長難句分析]這句話的主干是it is obvious that…， and that…。。其中代詞it是形式主語，真正的主語是兩個(gè)由that引導(dǎo)的主語從句。對于代詞it做形式主語的主語從句，我們翻譯的時(shí)候，大多采用固定譯法，這里的it is obvious that…，我們一般翻譯為“顯而易見的是…”或“很明顯…”。
[譯文]再者，顯而易見的是一個(gè)國家的經(jīng)濟(jì)實(shí)力與其工農(nóng)業(yè)生產(chǎn)效率密切相關(guān)，而效率的提高則又有賴于各種科技人員的努力。
例3：There is no agreement whether methodology refers to the concepts peculiar to historical work in general or to the research techniques appropriate to the various branches of historical inquiry。
[長難句分析]這句話的主干是There is no agreement。其后whether引導(dǎo)的是同位語從句，補(bǔ)充說明agreement的內(nèi)容。在這個(gè)同位語從句中，peculiar to…。和appropriate to…是形容詞做后置定語，分別修飾concepts和techniques。我們翻譯較長的同位語從句時(shí)，一般將其譯為獨(dú)立的句子。
